Today I taught a graduate digital history class about CSS. I only had an hour, and there was no projector in the room, so I put together a tutorial to walk through how to take a list from normal looking list to navigation style list.

Here it is, in case you are interested. All the explanation is in the linked CSS file. Best to use something besides IE to view the CSS.

Since I used an HTML5 doctype, I experimented with the now legal application of the <a> tag around a block element. In this case, I have code that looks like this:

<a href="#"><li> ... </li></a>

The weird thing about this is that the only thing that has stopped us from using this technique is fear of the almighty validator. As it turns out, browsers quietly kept the functionality while HTML itself did not. Because of this, the functionality is spotty. In the above picture, you can see that the list items are underlined, even though I explicitly set text:decoration to none.

Still, this might be a fun technique to play with.

I meant to post this before, but, well, I didn’t. This is the video I created for my Library Use Instruction class. I wish I could link to my classmate’s tutorials, because they were very good.

Design video from karindalziel on Vimeo.

If you link over to the vimeo page, on the bottom right, you can download the full size Windows Media version. Feel free to do with it as you will.

I am a little ambivalent about this project. I think the concept was good, but I feel I could have illustrated my points more clearly.

I used CamStudio and I may have used recordMyDesktop to record the screen. I used Inkscape for the design of the flier, and Windows Movie Maker to put it all together. I also used Power Point for the slides (I just got Office 2007 and wanted to play) but I could have used Open Office Impress just as easily.

I started out trying to do this entirely with open source software, but settled for free (as in free beer) software. Video editing, unfortunately, still has a ways to go. But it is getting better- I have no doubt that soon I’ll be able to ditch Windows Movie Maker as well.

If you use MediaWiki to run an internal wiki, and like to save your work often, you may be somewhat frustrated by the fact you have to save, then go back to edit mode and scroll down to return to your place.

These are instructions to create an extension to add a “save and continue” link that will save the article and then take you back to editing mode, scrolled down to where you were.

I have not been able to find a ready made extension or greasemonkey script for this- if one exists, please let me know and I will point to that instead! At some point I may learn how to create an extension you can just download, but for now, just follow these steps. It’s easy!

1: Install the chickenfoot Firefox extension and restart Firefox.

1b. Once Firefox is restarted, press F8 or go to view>sidebar>chickenfoot to see the chickenfoot sidebar.

2. Go to this page of site specific scripts, copy the code for MediaWiki ” Save & continue” and paste it into the top pane of the chickenfoot sidebar.

2b. At this point, you can test the script out by going to any MediaWiki edit page and pressing the green play button. Magic!

3. Click the “Package script as a Firefox extension” button, and enter in relevant information:

Name: Whatever you want to name it.

Author: Your name.

Description: Whatever or leave blank.

Version: Whatever or leave as is.

Includes/Excludes: Put the sites you want the script to apply to. (e.g. http://*.wikipedia.com/* For Wikipedia. Use * to replace parts of URL’s so they apply to an entire site)

GUID: Just click the button to generate- if you want to make it updatable, you’ll have to use the same number the next time you save the extension.

Then chose where to save the file (Save file as…)

4. Go to file>Open File in Firefox, find that file you just made, and it will load as an extension.

4b. Restart firefox again.

Next time you go to the site you specified in the “Includes/Excludes” field, you’ll see an extra button:

Before:

After:

 Uninstalling:

If you ever want to remove the script, just go to Tools>Add ons, choose extensions, and then uninstall the extension you just made. It will look something like this, but with the name you gave it.

Tada! Now you can go tell everyone you make Firefox extensions. If others in your organization want to use it, you can email it to them and tell them to open it in Firefox.
