The dangers of being a girl

There's a lot of talk on the web about the dangers of a woman putting herself out there. As much as I wish it wasn't still true, it is.

This story reminded me that it's still true. Living in Nebraska I have come to believe I'm safe, but the truth is, I'm not. Not really.

Just being female is enough to be a target sometimes. Hell, sometime, just being human is enough. There are some sick people out there. Found via FlowrBx's flickr page.

What I did this week - Gem and Mineral Show and playing with the kittens

Geoff and I went to the Lincoln Gem and Mineral Show this weekend. We ended up buying a big crystal thing and some coral (and I bought some pretty seed beads.)

Also, Monkey is still in the yard and still as cute as ever.

Gadgets

Pink and Blue

I have a lot of gadgets. My MP3 player, Nintendo DS, Camera, Phone, etc, etc etc.

I sometimes think I would like to live a simple life. But then I think of how much I would miss my DS (etc.), and I change my mind. Click through to the Flickr picture for notes.

Pictures and videos of my trip

I had a great time in Santa Fe and Albuquerque. I'll write more later. In the meantime, here's a video and some pictures:

More games

I bought Geoff a PSP (of course, I secretly want to play it too...). These are the now game systems in our house:

Console (the starred ones are currently hooked up):

Nintendo (original)
Super Nintendo *
Nintendo 64 *
Game cube (don't need this anymore since the Wii plays GC games)
Wii *
X Box *
Playstation 2 *

Portable:

Gameboy
Gameboy Color
Gamegear (I think?)
Game Boy Advance
Nintendo DS
PSP

And that's if you don't count the computer.

In which Karin decides not to spend money

I recently got a little bit of money (OK, not really a little bit) and I have been pondering what to do with it. I have debated a lot of (pretty selfish) things - a TV, lots of video games, a new computer, etc. etc. The thing I have been considering the most is a laptop.

On the surface, it seems like a natural- I will be traveling to conferences, I am getting my master's mostly online, and, well, I love computers and gadgets. I was almost set to buy a Macbook yesterday - after all, the University has some for $900 ($200 off regular price) and there's only a few left. And it's a Mac! how could I go wrong?

In the end, though I realized that I don't really need a laptop. It would be pretty useful in a few situations, but in general, it would be one more thing to lug around. I have all my applications and files on a keydrive, and it's seldom that I don't have access to a PC. I can live without the internet for a few days (really!). I don't really want the trouble of finding a hotspot just so I can check my email, which is probably spam anyway. I can print out things I want to read ahead of time to keep myself busy - printing out 40 pages will only be about $2.50, and beats reading on a screen.

So, no laptop for me right now. I'm not going to write it off completely- I know what I want in a laptop, so I can keep my eye out and grab one if I see a really great deal. Usually when I decide to wait on something like this I come across a great deal within a few months.

So what am I going to do with the money, you ask? I'm going to (finally) open up some mutual fund accounts. I might use a little to buy some new work clothes.

It's satisfying to know that there's nothing I really want that I don't already have. I really have it good.

Snow Day fun

Today was a snow day. I really needed the day off, but I am afraid I wasn't all that productive with it. I made a video:

And I took some pictures:

I did a little bit of homework, and I cleaned the kitchen:

The kitchen is clean!!

It was a good day.

Comments are working again

OK, I've installed a few new spam traps, and the move to a new location seems to have foiled some spammers, so comments should work again (and they should publish immediately).

Happy commenting, and thanks for being patient. My apologies to anyone that tried to comment int he last 2 days- your comment probably got lost. :(
