Art Court

The owner/operator/director of a local art gallery in town had a court date today concerning the ticket she got for advertising without a license. (see articles) Gomez won, which is good. The whole thing was pretty dumb. The police officer that was being questioned said he had never noticed any markings before the night in question (when someone called to complain about the "vandalism") - but the marking had been there, first Friday of the month, for almost a year. Obviously, they weren't THAT noticeable, or he would have noticed them before.

I just wonder who had so little of a life that they took the time to call the police about the markings. I guess they thought it was spray paint, but it really doesn't LOOK like spray paint.

The think that the trial really brought to mind for me, though, was the fact that for many people, First Friday in Lincoln holds NO significance. The police officer questioned did not know about it, and could also not name any downtown galleries after working the downtown beat for 3 years. I come from a pretty one-sided view, though, as I love art.

But for anyone who might be even the tiniest bit curious, please give First Friday a shot. There's free food! (I'm especially fond of the cream puffs) and free wine. There's a list of openings at the Lincoln Art Council website under "calendar" - you'll also find listings in the Lincoln Journal star.
